Get into the party atmosphere this summer with a visit to some of England’s top annual events and free festivals in August listed below.

Lytham 1940s Wartime Festival – Lytham Green, Lancashire – 15th & 16th August

The 1940’s brought to life with a bang! From the dark days of Dunkirk, through the blitz and hard times on the home front to D-Day and victory in Europe and Asia, come join in the atmosphere and immerse yourself in a brilliant weekend of entertainment, re-enactment and have-a-go fun!

Be wowed by one of the best events in August, as fireworks light up the Howardian Hills at The Castle Howard Proms Spectacular.  An unforgettable night, sit back and enjoy this fantastic concert on the north lawn with stunning views over the Great Lake and the house rising up behind you.

The National Forest Wood Fair – Beacon Hill Country Park, Woodhouse Eaves, Leicestershire – 31st August 9am – 5pm

An annual celebration of timber, trees and woodcrafts, an action-packed day with lumberjacks, chainsaw carvers, wood mizers and horseloggers.  You can have a go at eco art, cheer on the log to leg race, hitch a ride on a tree lift and hear stories from the Wild Man of the Woods.  There’s loads of fun for the kids!


Shrewsbury Says It With Flowers – 14th & 15th August

Flowers, fireworks and two fun-packed days of celebrity chefs, floral displays and family attractions at the Shrewsbury Flower Show.

Oxford Foodies Festival – Oxford South Parks, Oxford – 29th, 30th & 31st Augustballooning-565795_640

Eat and drink your way around one of the UK’s biggest food festival.  They have top chefs cooking in the Chef’s Theatre, wine, beer and cocktails in the Drink’s Theatre. Kids can learn to cook too in the Children’s Cookery Theatre.

Bristol Balloon Fiesta – Ashton Court Estate, Bristol – 6th – 9th August  

See Bristol’s skies awash with colour as hundreds of hot air balloons fly over the city. The festival in August is Europe’s largest ballooning event.

Notting Hill Carnival – London – 30th – 31st August

Britains biggest street party.  Join the dancers as they wind their way through the streets to an energetic soundtrack of soca, calypso and other rhythms from the Caribbean – and beyond. Or choose a good spot from which to watch the parade pass by.

Portsmouth International Kite Festival – Southsea Common – 15th & 16th August, Free Admission

One of the premier kite festival in the UK celebrating their 24th anniversary.  A great lineup of kite artists attending from Europe and beyond will fill the skies above Southsea with an incredible array of beautiful and colourful kites.

Broadstairs Folk Week – Kent – 7th – 14th August

Now in its 50th year, a hugely popular annual festival by the sea.  With over 500 vents throughout the week including concerts, workshops, dances, parades, craft fair, children’s festival, morris dancers in venues ranging from the 600 seater Concert marquee in the town’s leafy park to the intimate Sailing Club on the seafront.

Cowes Week – Isle of Wight – 8th – 14th August

With up to 40 races a day and more than 1,000 boats pulling into harbour, Cowes Week is the sailing spectacular event not to be missed.  Completely free to attend, many of the events can be enjoyed from the shores along Cowes beach and parade.
