London in 2014

Even though the weather is miserable, you may have the January blues – fear not, London has many exciting new events and festivals over the next few months to make that frown turn upside down. If you have only planned a flying visit to Europe’s third largest city, you have to prioritise. Here at Les Routiers we want to be able to guide you in the best way possible, so you can make the most of your time in this great capital.

Kick off the New Year in colour and tradition when London hosts the annual Chinese New Year celebrations! 2014 is the year of the horse and Chinatown will create a fantastic array of festivities for all to enjoy; so much effort goes into the festival that it has been named the biggest in the world outside China! Hundreds of thousands of people turn out to take part in the revelries, making way for the traditional dragon dancers who weave their way among the throng. Chinatown itself will go bonkers, with New Year-themed decorations, special menus and events at its 100-odd restaurants, bars, cafes, shops and all sort of food! Chinese New Year is on January 31st but Sunday the 2nd is when the capital’s festivities will begin. At 10am the celebrations start with a parade through Trafalgar square, followed by performances featuring music, Chinese dragons, lion dances, acrobatics and firecrackers.

London is for lovers on Valentine’s Day, the city has the ideal mix of cool, quirky, sweet and spectacular places to visit. Impress your date with panoramic views, catch a West End show, take a romantic stroll through the vast amount of royal parks, snuggle up in a cosy pub or soak up some history and culture. A perfect place to take your date is the beautiful Kensington gardens, wander through the formal avenues of magnificent trees and ornamental flower beds which cover an impressive 275 acres! You and your date will be blown away by the beauty of the Kensington Palace, the peaceful Italian Gardens, Peter Pan statue, the stunning Albert Memorial and the Serpentine Gallery.

Shamefully, London only has one public planetarium – but don’t worry it’s a good one, stare up at the nights sky with your favourite person and learn about our solar system – you might even see ET!  Late events give you a chance to peer into the heavens through the Royal Observatory’s monster 28-inch telescope, then grab a hot drink at the Prime Meridian where astronomers will be on hand to answer questions. Even if you can’t take your eyes off your loved one for more than a couple of minutes, it’s always romantic to combine stunning view with a warm drink.

Thinking of a nightcap – The Troubadour is a Les Routiers award winner for 2014. It’s quirky, relaxing and bursting with atmosphere, makes it a favourite among Les Routiers members.
