On the Windmill Road, opposite the village hall, you’ll find one of the best country pubs in Britain. The Black Horse is a 17th century craftsman’s cottage, lovingly extended and refurbished into an excellent village pub that would put many of the London gastro pubs to shame. The village of Fulmer is near Pinewood studios and the Black Horse gets frequent visitors from there. The regular clientele is a happy mix of mums coming in for coffee before or after the school run, families visiting for a hearty Sunday lunch, locals popping in for a spot of real ale and ramblers warming up in front of the open fire. The pub is open all day for breakfast, lunch and dinner and holds events and barbeques in the summer in the charming, spacious garden. If the summer is typically British, one can hide under heated canopies.
Customer Services & Pub Manager Leanne Warren and her team have created a perfect blend of old-world village charm and fresh, vibrant decor. The pub is laid out well and diners can choose a cosy table in the dining room or a secluded one in one of the more tucked-away nooks and crannies. The wooden tables and chairs are matched with stylish rugs and lime-green cushions and even the rest rooms have had a make-over and now feel luxurious and clean, complete with Molton Brown toiletries.
There is a post box outside the pub, painted gold in honour of Rio, Sophie Christiansen’s Olympic-winning horse (which is stabled at the local Riding for the Disabled Association). The Black Horse team host charity events and auctions and like to support local issues. They champion local food, too, and if you pop in for breakfast you can tuck into eggs collected from a farm literally up the road.
The menu is well-stocked with good British food from fish and chips to roast dinner and all the familiar favourites are presented in their best possible incarnation. The menu goes beyond what one would expect from pub food – you can also sample Goat’s Cheese, Asparagus, Broad Bean and Pea Risotto or a Fillet of Seabass with Crayfish Hollandaise and Samphire, followed by home-made ice cream or perhaps something from the international wine list. There are some innovative ideas for sharing; Whole baked camembert and red onion chutney a family favourite, as are the themed sharing boards (‘Mezze’ with a mouth-watering selection of Mediterranean Vegetables, cheeses and homemade flatbread or ‘Sea’ with a bounty of seafood and Aïoli).
Visitors praise the attentive and friendly service and now you can stay the night in one of the two boutique en-suite guest rooms that are open for bookings. Now you can make a day trip of it even if you’re not quite local. And for a pub such as this, the journey would be justified.
